The Monastery of St. George

The Monastery of St. George the Victorious is the only active male monastery in Southeastern Bulgaria and represents a remarkable architectural monument from the National Revival period.There is no exact data on when the Christian cloister was founded. The current church was erected in 1856. In 1945, it was expanded with the addition of two side altars—one dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra, and the other to the Holy Martyrs Sophia, Faith, Hope, and Love. In 1966, a 20-meter bell tower was constructed. The monastery houses many valuable examples of iconographic art from the 18th and 19th centuries. One of them is the miraculous patron icon of St. George. Another holy site within the complex is the ayazmo (sacred spring) with holy water.
