
Saint Bogorditsa Church
"ST. BOGORODITSA", built in the period 1840 - 1860, is the oldest church in Burgas. The service in Greek continued until 1906, when the church was renamed from "Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos" to "Transfiguration of the Lord". The church building is a three-aisled basilica with 12 monolithic marble columns supporting the roof structure and the extensive balconies. The church houses icons painted by monks in Mount Athos on the Athos peninsula. In 1927-28, the two towers of the church were built and three bells were placed in one. After the Second World War, the church was declared a cultural monument. On 16.03.1952, the Church Board of Trustees returned the old name of the church - "Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos". From November 1957 to the end of 1958. The temple was completely painted by the icon painter Nikolai Evgenievich Rostovtsev.
