Church Saints Cyril and Methodius
The Cathedral Church of Sts. Cyril and Methodius is one of the symbols of Burgas and one of the most beautiful churches in the country. The cathedral is situated in the city centre, on Sts. Cyril and Methodius Square. It bears the name of the holy brothers, creators of the Slavic alphabet and spreaders of Christianity among Slavic-speaking peoples. It was built between 1897 and 1907 to plans drawn up by Italian architect Ricardo Toscani. The church is of the three-nave basilica type. The interior of the cathedral is divided by five pairs of load-bearing marble columns. The main dome rises above a tall twelve-sided drum with windows. The beautiful stained glass above the main entrance depicts Cyril and Methodius. The unique frescoes are the work of distinguished Bulgarian artists Prof. Gyudjenov and Kozhuharov, who also painted the frescoes of the St. Alexander Nevsky Church in Sofia.
