The Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord

4.4

The Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord is the oldest active Orthodox church along the southern Bulgarian Black Sea coast and the oldest building in Pomorie. It was built on the site of a smaller 9th-century church. Completed in 1765, it was consecrated by the Metropolitan of Anchialos, Ananias (1759–1775). The building has a gable roof, a wooden ceiling, and a floor paved with large, square stone slabs. An apse on the eastern wall is missing from the church's current layout. The iconostasis is crafted entirely from woodcarvings featuring various floral motifs. The church has no frescoes, but it houses seventy-four icons dating from the late 15th to the early 20th century.
