Burgas turns pink for Giro d’Italia 2026

The Color Pink: A Symbol of Passion, History, and Victory

The Municipality of Burgas invites all citizens, businesses, hotels, restaurants, and institutions to transform the city into a sea of pink during the week of Giro d’Italia 2026.

For the first time in the 109-year history of one of the world’s most prestigious cycling tours, the Giro d’Italia will start in Bulgaria. Burgas will serve as the primary hub for the first two stages, hosting the finish line of the opening stage on May 8, 2026.

Why Pink?

The pink color (Maglia Rosa) has been the emblem of the Giro d’Italia since 1931. It was then that journalist Armando Cougnet of the Italian sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport introduced a special jersey for the general classification leader, ensuring spectators could easily identify the frontrunner.

The color was not chosen by chance; it was taken directly from the iconic pink pages of La Gazzetta dello Sport, the race's organizer since 1899. Thus, pink became more than just a color—it became a symbol of passion for cycling, of the competitive spirit, and of Italian sporting tradition. Over the years, the Maglia Rosa has become one of the most coveted prizes in global sports, worn by legends such as Eddy Merckx, Francesco Moser, and Miguel Induráin.

Now, that pink legacy arrives in Burgas. Our city has the honor of welcoming the peloton and launching this legendary Grand Tour.

A Call to Action: Let Burgas Shine in Pink!

The Municipality of Burgas calls upon all residents and visitors to actively participate in the "Burgas in Pink" initiative during the week of the race (May 5–12, 2026).

How you can participate:

Decorate: Adorn storefronts, terraces, balconies, and entrances with pink flowers, flags, ribbons, and decorations.

Dress the Part: Wear pink on May 8, the day of the stage finish in Burgas.

Hospitality: Restaurants and hotels are encouraged to create special "pink" menus, cocktails, or guest packages.

Business: Illuminate building facades in pink and display themed elements.

Community: Share your photos using the hashtags #BurgasInPink and #GirodItalia2026.

"Pink is not just a color—it is a symbol of emotion, energy, and victory. Together, let us make Burgas the most beautiful and memorable start in the history of the Giro d’Italia. This invitation is for everyone—from individual citizens to our largest businesses. The brighter we shine in pink, the louder our city’s name will resonate across the globe," stated the Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov.

This initiative is part of the global Giro d’Italia campaign "Città in Rosa" (Cities in Pink), where iconic landmarks in host cities are illuminated in the race's signature hue.

Together, we will create an unforgettable atmosphere and prove that Burgas does not just host major events—it lives them with all its heart.
