The Church of Saint Great Martyr George

4.4

The Church of Saint Great Martyr George is the largest Orthodox temple in Sozopol, located in the heart of the Old Town. Built in 1828, it stands on the foundations of an early Christian basilica from the 4th–5th centuries and a medieval monastery that once served as an episcopal seat.Architecturally, it is a three-nave pseudo-basilic temple built of hewn stone, featuring a beautiful dome and a bell tower added in later years. The church is famous for housing invaluable Christian relics, including a piece of the Holy Cross, part of the relics of Saint Andrew the Apostle, and the relics of Saint John the Baptist. "The complex is a cultural property of local significance, fully restored in the 1900s. It houses the relics of Saint John the Baptist, a piece of the Holy Cross, and myrrh from the tomb of Saint Nicholas."
