Petko Zadgorski Art Gallery

4.8

The "Petko Zadgorski" Art Gallery is one of the oldest in the country. It is housed in a building that was specially converted for the purpose from a Jewish synagogue — a remarkable architectural monument of the city, built at the beginning of the last century to a design by Italian architect Ricardo Toscani. The gallery bears the name of the distinguished Burgas artist Petko Zadgorski, who served as the first chairman of the Burgas Artists' Society, founded in the 1960s. The gallery's collection consists of approximately 3,000 works of painting, sculpture and graphic art. Among the pieces held by the Burgas Art Gallery are works by Ivan Mrkvička, Bencho Obreshkov, Zlatyu Boyadzhiev, Vladimir Dimitrov-Maistora, Iliya Petrov and others. The "Petko Zadgorski" Gallery also preserves valuable icon paintings from the Strandzha region, created between the 17th and 20th centuries, including works by Zahari Zograf and Dimitar Zograf. The gallery's halls host jubilee exhibitions, anniversary shows dedicated to Bulgarian and Burgas artists, as well as collectors', international, thematic, curatorial and charitable exhibitions. The Burgas Art Gallery also serves as a venue for concerts, book presentations, recitals, award ceremonies and honorary distinctions, and stands as one of the most important cultural centres in the city. Winter opening hours: Tuesday to Friday 09:00 – 18:00 Saturday: 09:00 – 13:00 / 13:30 – 17:00 CLOSED: Sunday and Monday
