St. Stephen's Church

4.5

The Church of Saint Stephen, also known as the "New Metropolis," was built between the 11th and 13th centuries. It was extended westward in the 16th century, and the narthex was added in the 18th century. In terms of layout, the church is a three-nave basilica; the central nave rises above the side aisles and is crowned at both the eastern and western ends by oval pediments. It is constructed of stone blocks and brick, incorporating numerous reused architectural elements—such as cornices, capitals, and reliefs—from earlier, demolished Christian buildings.
