Church of Christ Pantocrator

The Church of Christ Pantocrator (Christ the Almighty) was built during the 13th–14th centuries and is one of the most remarkable and best-preserved medieval churches in Nessebar—a prime example of the picturesque style in ecclesiastical architecture. A band of tall, double-recessed arches runs along the entire length of the facade, while above them, a distinctive decorative pattern of small ceramic bowls and quatrefoils winds in three rows. Above the apses on the eastern facade, a brick-laid frieze of swastikas—an ancient symbol of solar worship—draws the eye. The richly decorated drum of the dome is pierced by eight arched windows.
