Basilica of Our Lady of Eleusis

The Basilica of the Holy Mother of God Eleusa (from the Greek for "Tenderness") is located on the northern shore of the peninsula. Its construction dates back to the 5th century, with brick stamps indicating the era of Emperor Justinian (527–565). It is believed to be the oldest church in Nesebar. The Monastery of the Holy Mother of God Eleusa in Nesebar is mentioned in charters issued by Tsar Ivan Alexander (14th century). It was likely here that the icon of the Holy Mother of God Eleusa was kept; its silver revetment was commissioned by Samuel, the uncle of Tsar Ivan Alexander. Later, the icon was transferred to the Church of Saint Stephen and subsequently to the National Historical Museum in Sofia, where it remains to this day.
