The ancient and medieval fortress of the Foros Peninsula - the predecessor of modern Burgas If you want to touch the historical spirit of Burgas and its long-kept oldest secrets, here is the place that will take you hundreds of years back... The Foros Peninsula is located in the Poda area (in the Kraimorie district of Burgas). In 2008, archaeological research was carried out for the first time, which established that there are still preserved remains of the lost city, the predecessor and symbol of the city of Burgas - the ancient and medieval fortress and port of Burgos / Poros. Here, on Foros, archaeologists discovered remains of the mythical ancient tower depicted on the coat of arms of Burgas. The find proves that our city has at least 20 centuries of history. The fortress was created in the middle of the 2nd century by the Roman emperor Antoninus Pius. It was created under the name Poro (strait), serving to protect the swelling of Lake Mandren. A dedicatory inscription from the 2nd century states that burgs (fortresses) were built along the borders of the Roman colony of Deultum, which is probably where the name of today's Burgas comes from. It was here that the port of the large center of Deultum was located, which was guarded by an impregnable fortress. The area was also the scene of a famous battle from the time of the Second Bulgarian Empire, which glorified for the last time the uncompromising and great Bulgarian fighting spirit, with which we have amazed the world over the centuries. At the beginning of the 14th century, the Bulgarian Tsar Theodore Svetoslav undertook a campaign to the Black Sea coast. His power extended over Rusokastro, Messemvria, Anhialo, Sozopol and Agathopol. The Byzantine emperor amassed a huge number of troops to stop the Bulgarian advance. In 1304, the decisive battle took place at the bridge of Lake Mandren, where the Byzantine army was defeated.
