The Thessaloniki Conspirators
The Thessaloniki attacks , carried out in April 1903, are the most shocking and bloody event in the history of the Macedonian liberation struggle until the Ilinden-Preobrazhenie Uprising. They were caused by the simmering resentment and the desperate desire to seek a solution for the freedom of Macedonia and Edirne at any cost. "The Thessaloniki Conspirators" is a play about the eternal rebellion of a young man - shocked and irreconcilable with the injustice in the world around him. It is a story about the clash between idealism and the meaning of self-sacrifice, told through the eyes of the sole survivor of the group of gemidjii and his existential protest. This is a story about a generation led by the strength of the young spirit, which refuses to live on its knees and accepts death as a sacrament. In times when extreme ideas are once again seducing and uniting young people, "The Thessaloniki Conspirators" asks the question: where does idealism end and the destruction of man begin? Because freedom comes not with time, but with action, and the transition from the rebellion of reason to the humility of the soul is a long one — "paved with bones instead of cobblestones."
