Church of St. John Aliturgetos

The Church of St. John Aliturgetos ("The Unconsecrated") was built in the 14th century and represents the pinnacle of medieval religious architecture in the region. Although damaged by the 1913 earthquake, it continues to impress with its architectural magnificence. The church is of the cross-in-square type, featuring a square naos and a spacious narthex. In the center of the naos, four columns support a tall, narrow dome. The facades, however, are a true spectacle—each designed in a unique way. Through the skillful alternation of white stone blocks and red bricks, combined with ceramic bowls, a variety of ornamental patterns resembling colorful embroidery have been created. The preserved eastern facade is particularly beautiful, featuring three articulated apses adorned with slender niches and elegant arcading.
