Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius

4.8

The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Sozopol is one of the most significant cultural and historical sites in the town, also known among locals as the "Refugee Church." Today, it functions as a summer cathedral and is located at the entrance to the Old Town, right on Khan Krum Square. The church achieved worldwide fame when the incredible archaeological discoveries—the relics of St. John the Baptist, unearthed in 2010 on the nearby St. Ivan Island—were transferred and displayed here for veneration. Architecturally, the building is an impressive three-nave, cross-domed basilica. It features a prominent bell tower, a high domed structure (whose dome, along with a 3-meter cross, was gilded in 2011), and beautiful neoclassical pilasters on the facade.
