"Prof. Bozhidar Dimitrov" Archaeological Museum Sozopol

The Archaeological Museum of Sozopol is situated in the old part of the city and is one of the 100 National Tourist Sites of Bulgaria. It brings together artefacts from all historical periods in the city's rich history. The finds on display are remarkable — materials spanning from the deepest antiquity through to the Classical period and the Middle Ages, shedding light on the life and development of the local population from the 5th century BC to the 17th century AD, as well as works of Christian art from the 17th to the 19th century. The museum holds an extensive collection of ancient Greek vases, over 120 preserved amphorae in the black- and red-figure style, coins, statues, and the world's largest collection of stone anchors. Among the exhibits from the most recent archaeological excavations are the alabaster reliquary in which the relics of St. John were preserved — discovered on St. Ivan Island in 2010 — as well as the Sozopol vampire, which added a curious new dimension to the city's already fascinating history.
