Archaeological Museum - Sozopol

The Archaeological Museum in Sozopol was established in 1961 and is one of the most significant cultural sites along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, listed under No. 8 in the "100 National Tourist Sites" of Bulgaria. It preserves the memory of ancient Apollonia Pontica (today's Sozopol) and traces the history of the region from the end of the 6th millennium BC to the 18th century. One of the most popular exhibits is an actual medieval skeleton of a man, discovered during excavations near the monastery of "St. Nicholas the Wonderworker". He was stabbed in the chest with an iron ploughshare (an iron stake) – a clear sign of a pagan ritual performed to prevent him from turning into a vampire.
