BEYOND RULES

From July 31 to August 30, 2026, the Center for Contemporary Art and Library - Burgas presents the exhibition "BEYOND RULES" , which brings together for the first time in a joint project two bright artistic personalities - American photographer Heather Bennett and Bulgarian artist Nina Ruseva. The curators of the project are Stefan Stoyanov and Stefka Doncheva. "Beyond Rules" explores different artistic approaches to themes of identity, memory, care, and inner freedom. Although working in different media, the two artists build a common visual narrative about the human being beyond imposed societal roles and expectations. Heather Bennett presents the photographic series Photos of Gifts – works in which the traditional image of the gift becomes a multi-layered metaphor for human relationships, care and female identity. In her works, she uses photography both as an image and as an object, questioning the way we perceive images in contemporary visual culture. Beautifully wrapped gifts, wrapped in magazine images, reveal the tension between the visible and the hidden, between the gesture of giving and its often unnoticed meaning. The series transforms the everyday act of gift-giving into a powerful symbol of attention, dedication and human closeness. Nina Ruseva is among the most recognizable contemporary Bulgarian artists. Her work moves between abstraction and figuration, building large-scale pictorial spaces, saturated with energy, strong color and emotional depth. In her paintings, colors and shapes become carriers of inner states, and the plastic language creates a sense of movement, transformation and spiritual experience. Despite their different artistic languages, Bennett and Ruseva meet in their quest to place the viewer beyond the obvious. The exhibition offers a dialogue between photography and painting, between the intimate and the monumental, between personal history and universal human experiences. The "BEYOND RULES" project is being implemented with the financial support of the Burgas Municipality and is part of the cultural initiatives that contribute to Burgas' candidacy for European Capital of Culture, establishing the city as a space for international cultural exchange and presentation of contemporary visual art.
