Dreaming of distancing himself from his image as the author of sentimental romantic novels, he writes a short poetic fairy tale about a little sea snail that has lost its shell and is searching for the meaning of life. To his own surprise, through this story Theophil rediscovers his inspiration. But he has no idea what effect the tale will have on those closest to him. Like looking into a mirror, they begin to recognize themselves in the characters—sea urchins, shrimp, mermaids, and other sea creatures—and discover hidden messages in the metaphors. That evening, everyone gathers to settle their scores. And a real catastrophe unfolds. One after another, the members of the family pour out everything that has been weighing on them, expose their fears, and say everything that is on their minds, giving rise to a torrent of comic and surreal misunderstandings and crossed wires. “Mirror, Mirror” by Léonore Confino is a witty contemporary comedy about the 21st-century human being, living in an age of increasing alienation. It raises the fundamental question of whether, as human beings, we are capable of seeing the world as it truly is—or whether we see it only through the reflection of what we ourselves are.
