Beyond the Norms

Burgas will host the large-scale curatorial project “Beyond the Norms” – a series of four exhibitions that introduce the audience to some of the most interesting contemporary female voices in art from Bulgaria, Norway and the USA. The initiative is realized with the financial support of the Culture Fund of the Municipality of Burgas and is part of the city’s cultural program in the context of its candidacy for European Capital of Culture 2032. The project is curated by Stefka Doncheva and Stefan Stoyanov – professionals with experience in the implementation of exhibitions and cultural initiatives in Bulgaria and in an international context. Stefan Stoyanov’s role is particularly significant as an established curator and art dealer with many years of experience in building exhibition concepts and working with international artists. He is the artistic director of Particolare Venice 2025, Particolare Vienna 2024 and the current artistic director of Sofia Art Fair. “Beyond the Norms” explores themes such as identity, form and independence beyond established visual and cultural models. Through painting, drawing, video, photography and spatial forms, the project creates a space for dialogue between different cultural contexts and individual artistic languages. At the center is the contemporary female voice – as a bearer of sensitivity, critical stance and cultural transformation. The first exhibition of the project will open on June 5 at 7:00 PM at the Center for Contemporary Art and Library in Burgas and will present the works of Mika Sav and Norwegian artist Trine Lise Nedreaas. Mika Sav is a multidisciplinary artist working in the fields of painting, sculpture, and symbolically rich visual imagery. Her works explore feminine energy, movement, inner strength, and spiritual transformation through plastic forms, rich color, and organic structures. Trine Lise Nedreaas works with video, drawing, photography and sculpture, and her artistic language is characterized by symbolism, psychological sensitivity and strong visual structure. In her works, she explores human identity, emotional states and the existential experience of modern man. In the second stage of the project, from July 30 to August 30, the exhibitions of Nina Ruseva and American artist Heather Bennett will be presented. Nina Ruseva is known for her expressive drawing and exploration of the psychological depth of the image. In her work, she combines intuitive gesture and conceptual clarity, creating visual images that convey a sense of memory, tension, and inner state. Heather Bennett works in the field of photography and visual culture, with her works raising questions about the female body, identity, and visual representation in the contemporary media environment. "Beyond the Norms" is not just an exhibition format, but a comprehensive curatorial project that raises questions about the place of contemporary art in society and its ability to reflect and transform cultural attitudes. The project establishes Burgas as an active point of international cultural exchange and contemporary art.
